Homeland

It all began with the Lamar Canyon pack. Their strength and deep bond were palpable even across great distances. Shewolf was capable of bringing down full-grown wapiti elk. Gray Alpha and Big Black were the calm center of the family, which eventually grew to twelve wolves. Their unity was so powerful that even larger packs avoided fighting them for the fertile territory. Shewolf’s daughter, Spitfire, continued the Lamar legacy for another seven years. After her death, the remaining wolves dispersed.

Following Shewolf’s death, Gray Alpha had to leave the Lamar pack, as all the remaining females were his daughters. His journey led him across the vast landscapes of Yellowstone National Park to Hayden Valley, where he founded the Wapiti Lake pack in 2014. Today, a silver-gray male (second from the right) and a white female (first from the right) lead the pack, which has grown into one of the largest in the park. In the wide expanse of Hayden Valley, they even take down powerful bison and cross the Yellowstone River. Despite losses and dangers beyond park boundaries, the pack remains strong and closely bonded.
